Morbi, Gujarat

MatruOS for Morbi's tile and sanitaryware makers

Morbi is the centre of India's ceramics trade. A Press Information Bureau factsheet of October 2025 describes it as the world's second-largest ceramic production cluster, with over 1,100 manufacturing units, an annual turnover of about USD 6.5 billion, and over 90% of India's ceramic production. Most of what it makes leaves Gujarat, on credit, to dealers in every state.

How business works in Morbi

Plants around Morbi, Wankaner and Thangadh press, glaze and fire wall tiles, floor tiles, vitrified tiles and sanitaryware. Much of the output is sold through Morbi trading firms, known locally as marketing companies, that pack it in their own brands and sell to dealers and showrooms across India. Exporters ship to the Gulf, Africa, the Americas and South-East Asia.

Trade runs on credit. Dealers commonly pay in 30 to 90 days, and longer when the market is slow. Every box carries a shade and size batch, and a dealer supplying a project wants all of it from one batch.

Fuel is the other constant. After the National Green Tribunal's 2019 order against coal gasifiers in Morbi, plants run on natural gas or propane, so a change in the gas price moves the cost of every square metre.

Where the pressure builds

Dues spread across statesDozens of dealers, each a few lakh, paying at different speeds. Knowing who to call first takes a full day with the ledger.
The right tax on every billMost sales go out of state with IGST; local sales carry CGST and SGST. One wrong state code puts the tax in the wrong head.
Buying at plant scaleClay, feldspar, frit, glaze, ink and cartons from many suppliers. Short or rejected deliveries are easy to miss when the bill arrives.
Export paperworkExport invoices in foreign currency, with an LUT on file each year, alongside domestic billing.
