MatruOS for Surat's textile traders and weavers

Surat is India's centre for man-made fabric. A Press Information Bureau factsheet of October 2025 puts its share at nearly 40% of the country's man-made fabric, and counts 1.25 to 1.5 lakh people in its zari industry alone, about 70% of them women working machines at home. Behind every saree sold in Kolkata or Kanpur is a chain of yarn agents, weavers, process houses, embroiderers and traders.

How business works in Surat

Yarn from the large polyester makers reaches weavers through agents. Grey cloth from looms in Sachin, Pandesara and Palsana goes to process houses for dyeing and printing, then on to embroidery and finishing units, and comes back to a trader in one of the city's textile markets. From there it goes to wholesalers across north, east and south India, usually through a commission agent, the dalal.

Credit is long. The agreed period, the dhara, often runs into months for outstation buyers, and payment comes with deductions for kasar and goods returns. Traders' bodies such as the Federation of Surat Textile Traders Association have pressed for shorter payment terms and limits on returns.

The year has two rushes: dispatches from Raksha Bandhan to Diwali, and the wedding season early in the year.

Where the pressure builds

Dues in many citiesBuyers in Kolkata, Delhi, Kanpur and Patna, each through a different agent, each paying at a different pace.
Returns and deductionsGoods returns and kasar that reduce each bill, and must be set against the right invoice.
Inter-state GSTMost sales leave Gujarat, so most bills carry IGST, with HSN and the buyer's GSTIN correct each time.
Buying from many handsGrey cloth, dyes and job work from many suppliers, with rejections to hold back before payment.
