Udyam registration

The free online registration that gives a micro, small or medium enterprise its Udyam number and certificate.

Udyam registration is how a business is recognised as a micro, small or medium enterprise by the Ministry of MSME. It is done online at udyamregistration.gov.in, it is free, and it uses the owner's Aadhaar and the business's PAN. Investment and turnover details are taken from income tax and GST records.

The business receives a permanent Udyam Registration Number, in the format UDYAM-GJ-01-0000000, and an e-certificate.

What it gives you

  • Protection on delayed payments from buyers under the MSMED Act, with the right to file a case on the Samadhaan portal.
  • Eligibility for many central and state schemes, such as credit guarantees and subsidies.
  • Priority sector lending from banks.
  • Preference in some government purchases.

What to keep in mind

  • Classification follows the limits in force, revised from 1 April 2025 (as of October 2026).
  • The category can change each year as investment and turnover change.
  • Traders can register, and their Udyam is used mainly for priority sector lending.

For buyers

A buyer should know which of its suppliers are registered micro or small enterprises, because their payment terms are protected by law and late payment affects the buyer's income tax.
