GSTIN format checker

A wrong character in a buyer's GSTIN means their input tax credit does not show up, and the invoice comes back for correction. Paste the number as printed to check it before you bill.

Paste it as printed. Spaces and dashes are removed for you.

To see the legal name and whether it is active, search it on the GST portal's Search Taxpayer page.

How this is worked out

Every figure the tool uses is listed here. Assumptions are fields in the tool, so you can change them to match your business.

  1. A GSTIN has 15 characters: a 2-digit state code, the 10-character PAN, the registration number under that PAN in the state, a 14th character, and a check character.
  2. The 14th character is Z for regular taxpayers, D for tax deductors (which carry a TAN in place of the PAN) and C for e-commerce operators collecting tax. Non-resident suppliers and UN bodies use a different layout.
  3. The check character is worked out from the first 14 with the GSTN mod-36 method. A mismatch almost always means a mistyped character.
  4. The fourth letter of the PAN gives the holder type, such as C for a company or F for a firm.

Questions

Questions people ask

Does a valid format mean the GSTIN is active?

No. The format and check digit show the number is well formed. Whether it is active, and whose it is, is shown on the GST portal's Search Taxpayer page.

What do the 15 characters mean?

Two digits for the state, the ten-character PAN, one character for the registration number under that PAN in the state, a 14th character (Z for most businesses), and a check character.

Why did my pasted GSTIN fail before?

Spaces and dashes from a PDF or an email were counted as characters. The checker now removes them before it checks.
