MatruOS for Tiruppur's knitwear exporters and job workers

Tiruppur is the knitwear capital of India. A Press Information Bureau factsheet of September 2025 says it employs about 10 lakh people, accounts for nearly 90% of India's cotton knitwear exports, and has more than 1,300 exporting units. Around those exporters are thousands of knitting, dyeing, printing, stitching and finishing units working on job work.

How business works in Tiruppur

An exporter takes an order from a brand or a buying house, books yarn, and sends it through a chain: knitting, dyeing and compacting, printing or embroidery, stitching at a fabricator, then checking and packing. Much of this is done by job workers on challans. Each order runs on a time-and-action calendar, and a missed ship date can cost the order.

Buyers pay by letter of credit or on 30 to 90 days. Job workers wait for their money, but registered micro and small suppliers are protected by the MSMED Act's 45-day limit. Dyeing units work under zero liquid discharge rules after court orders on the Noyyal river.

The Tiruppur Exporters' Association and the Apparel Export Promotion Council are among the bodies that represent the trade.
