A receipt voucher records money received before supply. Section 31(3)(d) of the CGST Act and rule 50 of the CGST Rules require one whenever an advance is received.
What it shows
- Supplier's name, address and GSTIN.
- A serial number of up to 16 characters, unique for the year.
- Date.
- Customer's name, address and GSTIN if registered.
- Description of the goods or services.
- Amount of the advance.
- Rate and amount of tax, where tax is payable on the advance.
- Place of supply, and whether tax is on reverse charge.
If the rate or the nature of supply is not known at the time, the rule gives fallbacks: tax at 18%, and an inter-state supply if the place of supply is unclear.

In everyday use
Outside GST, many businesses call any money receipt a receipt voucher, including payments against invoices. The GST meaning is narrower: it is for advances.
In MatruOS an advance is recorded with a receipt voucher and later set against the invoice.
